Refinement Over Reinvention in this North London Period Home by TXTURED

Simon Mayhew, founder of TXTURED.

Set on a leafy North London street, this period house had all the architectural charm you would expect. Generous proportions, original detailing and a strong sense of history were all present. Yet years of piecemeal changes had left it feeling visually and emotionally fragmented.

Despite its generous proportions and period charm, the house never quite felt settled. Circulation between rooms was disjointed, with no clear rhythm guiding you through the space.

Layers of past decisions competed rather than complemented one another, leaving the interiors feeling busy without being resolved. Most significantly, the home lacked a sense of emotional calm. Nothing was overtly wrong, yet nothing truly felt right.

When the owners approached me, they were not looking for a bold overhaul or architectural disruption. The brief was refreshingly clear. They wanted calm, cohesion and a sense of resolution. The aim was to quietly recalibrate the home so its original features and contemporary layers could finally speak the same language.

Rather than designing room by room, we began with atmosphere. How the home feels as you move through it. How light shifts throughout the day. How spaces hand over to one another without friction. Flooring became the unifying thread, reconnecting areas that once felt disjointed and restoring a sense of flow that now makes everyday living feel effortless.

The colour palette evolved organically. An alpine-inspired rug, a subtle nod to the client’s love of skiing, became an unexpected anchor. From this, a scheme of layered neutrals, warm browns, muted ochres and soft blush tones emerged. Chalky, textured wall finishes respond gently to changing light, adding warmth without heaviness and depth without distraction. Nothing shouts. Everything is intentional.

A Home Revealed, Room by Room

This arched timber display cabinet is a key focal point of the North London living room.

While the design language remains consistent throughout, certain spaces naturally became key moments within the home. In the sections below, I have picked out those rooms and shared insight into how each was shaped, both in terms of function and feeling, and how they contribute to the overall sense of calm and cohesion.

The Living Room: A Calm, Considered Heart to the Home

TXTURED designed the living room to feel quietly confident.

The living room is designed to feel quietly confident. It draws you in through balance, texture and restraint rather than overt statements. At its centre sits a newly installed Chesneys marble fireplace, chosen for its subtle elegance. Rather than dominating the room, it acts as a calm architectural anchor, allowing the surrounding elements to breathe.

Above, an abstract artwork by Anton Byrne Carter introduces movement and emotional depth, bringing warmth and energy to the pared-back palette. Overhead, a sculptural chandelier from West Elm creates a soft focal point, its form gently echoing curves found elsewhere in the room.

A curved brown velvet armchair adds comfort and tactility, encouraging the space to be lived in rather than simply admired. Along the wall, a fluted timber cabinet from Soho Home introduces rhythm and texture, balancing craftsmanship with function.

Underfoot, a bespoke-sized rug by Kelly Wearstler for The Rug Company grounds the seating area. Curtains in a textured Pepe Peñalver fabric filter natural light with ease. The result is a living room that feels layered, warm and quietly expressive, designed for everyday moments as much as considered design.

A Softer, More Relaxed Moment

Layered neutrals, soft textures and sculptural forms come together to create a calm, considered heart of the home.

This area of the living room was intentionally designed to feel more relaxed. It is a place to slow down and settle in. A generously proportioned Restoration Hardware sofa, upholstered in durable linen, anchors the room with both comfort and practicality.

At the centre, a travertine coffee table introduces weight and tactility, grounding the softness of the surrounding upholstery. A sculptural floor lamp from Lights & Lamps provides gentle illumination, creating an ambient glow that transitions beautifully from day to evening.

A bespoke checkered stool upholstered in Harlequin’s Blenets Mini fabric adds a subtle note of pattern, offering visual interest without feeling decorative for its own sake. Together, these elements create a layered, understated space that feels effortless and welcoming.

The Hallway: A Considered Arrival and a Sense of Flow

Marble chequerboard flooring, sculptural pieces and warm artwork set the tone for the home beyond.

The hallway sets the tone for the entire home, establishing rhythm, structure and calm from the moment you enter. Marble chequerboard flooring provides a strong architectural foundation, guiding movement through the space while introducing a subtle sense of formality.

A console from Restoration Hardware grounds the hallway, while an artwork by Anton Byrne Carter introduces warmth and softness. Rather than being purely transitional, the hallway becomes a space of visual interest and gentle anticipation.

The Powder Room: A Moment of Texture and Tone

An intimate powder room where sculptural porcelain, warm lighting and tactile finishes elevate the compact space.

Compact yet indulgent, the powder room is designed to feel intimate and layered. A custom porcelain basin fabricated by Casa Ceramica becomes the focal point, its veining and sculptural form adding drama within a restrained footprint.

Alabaster wall lights from Visual Comfort cast a warm, flattering glow, enhancing the depth of the materials. Lusso tapware introduces a subtle metallic contrast through its refined profile. Quartz textured walls add softness and tactility, transforming a functional space into a moment of considered design.

The Dining Room: A Room Shaped by Craft and Proportion

The dining space is shaped by bespoke design and tactile materials to encourage connection and calm.

The dining room is anchored by a bespoke dining table by Atelier278, designed as both a functional gathering point and a sculptural presence. Its proportions encourage connection without overpowering the room.

Chairs from Six The Residence provide tactile comfort, while a timber sideboard offers understated storage. Together, these elements create a dining space defined by craftsmanship, balance and quiet elegance.

The Master Bedroom: A Quiet Retreat Designed for Rest

A serene bedroom retreat, where soft layers, bespoke detailing and filtered light create a sense of calm and quiet luxury.

Upstairs, the home settles into a calmer rhythm. The main bedroom is designed as a retreat, anchored by an oversized bespoke upholstered headboard in Mark Alexander’s Sidewalk Putty fabric. Its scale creates a sense of enclosure and comfort, reinforcing the room’s purpose as a place of rest.

Layered linens in muted, tonal hues enhance the feeling of ease. Bedside tables from Restoration Hardware introduce balance and visual weight. Curtains by Archroll softly filter natural light, allowing the space to transition seamlessly from day to night. The result is a bedroom that feels calm, considered and quietly luxurious.

The Dressing Room and Bathroom: Order, Calm and Everyday Ritual

A composed dressing room and bathroom retreat, where bespoke joinery, textured finishes and architectural detailing bring order, calm and continuity (shown above and below).

The dressing room is designed to feel intuitive and composed. Floor-to-ceiling bespoke joinery creates a strong sense of order while maximising storage and reducing visual clutter. Slimline handles maintain a sense of lightness, allowing the cabinetry to read as architectural rather than decorative.

Beyond sliding doors, the bathroom continues this refined language. Existing elements were sensitively integrated with new finishes to ensure continuity. Floor tiles from Ca’petria and wall tiles from Architile introduce texture, while Lusso fittings add a clean, timeless edge. An arched shower screen softens the space architecturally, completing a retreat where function and restraint work in harmony.

The Reading Nook: A Quiet Corner for Slowing Down

A calm reading nook designed as a moment of pause, where soft textures and considered detailing encourage rest and reflection.

Designed as a deliberate pause within the home, the reading nook offers calm away from the main flow. A velvet armchair and ottoman from Soho Home invite you to settle in, while a coordinating rug adds warmth and texture underfoot.

Walls finished in COAT paint provide a soft backdrop, allowing materials to take the lead. A Roman blind in Casamance Paris Texas 6 fabric gently filters light. A floor lamp from Lights & Lamps completes the space, reinforcing its role as a retreat for reading and reflection.

A Home ThatFinally Feels Complete
